News & Advice

Here at NHBB, we know designing a home is no easy task, and the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your new luxurious home. It can also be one of the most stressful areas to design as there are so many decisions that need to be made when it comes to fixtures, fittings and finishes. There are plenty of things you should consider for your bathroom design. See some of our luxury home designs showing amazing bathrooms by clicking here!

Your bathroom can have many functions - it is of course a place to bath and shower, but it can also be your sanctuary, and where you choose to unwind. This means that you should consider the layout of your bathroom when designing so it can accommodate all these different physical and emotional needs.

There are lots of luxury bathroom design ideas out there - the choice is almost endless.

The bathroom, ensuite, powder room, or perhaps a wet room, even though it is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house, needs to be perfectly formed. It's not a case of just adding the perfect toilet, basin or showerhead. It is how it works together. And knowing how you want to use it.

Getting the bathroom layout is right is really important for your building project. From the design of a family bathroom to an ensuite our talented designers will help you with the best layout and help guide your choices - click here to see who they are!

Do you think you know the bathroom design rules?

A beautiful bathroom interior needs to look and feel great.

Here are some guidelines for your new bathroom, ensuite, powder room or wet room:

Sightlines

Plan the bathroom so that when you enter the room, the first thing you see isn't the toilet. Privacy is really important in a bathroom - this needs to be laid out so that people feel safe and not visible in the bathroom, even from the outside. Even if it might be a small bathroom, it still needs to be laid out perfectly.

Selecting surfaces

When selecting surfaces for your bathroom, you should make sure that it is easy to maintain. Strong cleaning products can eat away at porous materials such as stone and cement tiles. Make sure the slip resistance of any area with water or damp areas will meet your needs before placing these types of floors in high traffic areas like showers.

Lighting

The best lighting in a bathroom should be provided by wall mounted lights that are close to the mirror so we can see our faces better when applying make-up or shaving.

Avoid overhead downlights, as they cause shadows and annoyance. Lighting for bathrooms should have layered options with dimmable light soft enough for night-time visits plus bright overall illumination at the vanity area and additional task lighting nearby where you tend to do your grooming activities.

Natural light is always good (consider large windows) because it helps make small spaces feel larger than they really are! And makes the bathroom feel more luxurious.

Future Mobility issues

Are you planning on growing old in this beautiful new house? Consider having the design of a bathroom be able to be changed if you ever have to use it in a different way. Ask our designers how this can be done! It can be as easy as making the entry door a little bit wider or making the door handle a lever instead of a globe door handle.

Technology in the bathroom

Technology in a luxury bathroom is a must! People are looking for ways to make their lives easier, so why not do it in the bathroom, ensuite or powder room? Have you thought of:

·      A heated floor with a timer

·      Automatic taps with sensors so they don't run all day long while nobody's using them (the sensor can detect movement).

·      A hands-free toilet which makes life much simpler especially if someone has mobility issues like arthritis;

·      Maybe even Touchless soap dispensers.

Design for you, not for when you sell

Design your bathroom to suit your lifestyle and taste. If you’re not planning to sell the property you have spent ages building and perfecting in the next year, then create a design for the bathroom just for you - not for someone that you don’t know and try to guess their tastes, or even worse, a bathroom designed for a rental property.

Make sure you at least consider:

·      amazing tapware (yes, the totally indulgent and not really necessary Raindance showerhead and extra shower sprays coming at you from the walls),

·      a free-standing bath or spa bath (that takes up huge amounts of the room that can fit probably 3 people in it)

·      an unnecessarily large double vanity with far too much storage,

·      the beautiful imported feature marble slabs or porcelain tiles,

·      colours that you like

·      the heated floor (perfect for Perth winter mornings),

·      the beautiful wall tiles and decadent wall feature,

·      the most amazing shiny accessories that seem like jewellery for a bathroom,

·      and even the huge floor-to-ceiling mirrors, to create the luxury bathroom interiors you really want.

Bathrooms are beautiful spaces where we can relax after a long day or refresh before our next adventure. They are an important part of any home - from the way they look to the function they serve - so it's absolutely necessary that when building one, you do it right!

A lot of people find that designing a beautiful bathroom for their new build can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. There are many decisions that go into designing a bathroom and they all need to work together in order for your bathroom to be as luxury and well designed as the rest of your new home.

Make sure it is designed by an expert.

What Tristan has to say: Power points to the make-up section and the light to this is by far something we have learnt a lot about over the past 20 years. Every ensuite and bathroom has different natural light from windows, so utilize the drawing software to understand this at certain times of the day.

Also consider how each person lives in the home. My wife and I like the WIR to separate us between the bedroom and the ensuite for noise, this can be popular with shift works.

Airflow is very important to consider, make sure the ceiling fans are 400-500cubes in power min, that will reduce any extra steam hanging around. Don’t get crazy with tiles, 300-600mm tiles are great to avoid unnecessary cuts from the tiler at site or try to work so floor and wall tiles line up and are a division of 12 in size. Think about how they line up on the floor and the wall. First thing I look at when I judge the housing awards.
